Gumtree has opened its US chapter

Gumtree.com, the very much popular free classified website of the UK has started its US mission. Very recently kijiji the popular Canadian free classifieds entered in the US market. Now another famous classifieds gumtree is in the fight to grab US traffic.

So it may be anticipated that one day craigslist's monopoly in the field of free classifieds will be challenged.

Kijiji entered into the USA market

Finally kijiji has entered into the USA market. Now kijiji.com home page shows a map of USA and list of US cities. The list of other countries/regions is now show at the bottom of the home page.
I guess kijiji will be a strong competitor of craigslist in the USA. Kijiji.ca is already a competitor of craig's list in Canada.
At this moment backpage is the second most popular free classifieds site in the USA. Hopefully kijiji will soon be the second most popular free classifieds site in the USA. Kijiji has the biggest network worldwide.
At present kijiji is very much popular in Canada and Japan. Also it's partner gumtree.com is the most popular free classifieds site in the UK.

Kijiji is one step advance of craigslist in the sense that it support local languages while craigslist support only English.

Craigslist is the leader of free classifieds sites. It is founded by Craig Newmark in 1995. He started craigslist to serve as a non-commercial community bulletin board with classifieds and discussion forums.

The strength of the site is that it allows a wide range of HTML elements in posting including link to any website, external image, formatting html elements with style="..." , table, div, span and so on. While other free classifieds sites allow only basic text formatting like <b>, <u>, <i> etc. However, Craigslist prohibits using javascript, video, flash and some attribute inside <style> tag.
